What is distance learning/online classes?

Distance learning refers to any class that is taken at some distance away from the actual college campus. Examples of distance learning can include live-broadcasted classes (watching the class live in a classroom set up to do so away from the college campus) or online classes which are taken electronically, on a computer. Online classes allow a student to work anywhere they have access to a computer, at any time of the day or night. Books and other materials must still be purchased, and homework and test deadlines must still be met, but all coursework is done online.

How distance learning & online classes work…

Go to college with just a computer or TV monitor.

Both live-broadcasted and online classes work much the same way as in-person classes on a college campus, except that all interaction with the instructor and classmates is done electronically (over the computer or TV monitor), and all assignments are turned in electronically as well.

You choose your school, your class, & your instructor.

At the beginning of each semester, during registration, a student chooses a class with a specific instructor. That instructor then shares all information, including lecture materials, homework, and messages with all the students enrolled in that class via Canvas, the learning management system used by these colleges. All assignments must be completed by specific due dates and are graded by the teacher. Required books and other materials must be purchased by the student. Each teacher will have different requirements, due dates, grading policies, etc., just like at a traditional college. So, if you have three different classes, you will have three different teachers, all with different styles of teaching and requirements.
